What is the problem with the Peugeot 308 engine? ›

Damaged gaskets, seals, or oil pan issues can cause these leaks. Owners have also noticed higher-than-usual oil consumption in their Peugeot 308, caused by worn piston rings, valve stem seals or engine issues.

Vehicles fitted with the 1.6-litre diesel engine built between 10/10/17 and 30/11/17 were recalled because some of the components in the engine might not be to specification. Cars built between 27/10/14 and 27/03/15 can overheat and require a software update.

The Peugeot 308 is pretty capable on the road overall. While it perhaps doesn't shine in any single area, it offers a sorted enough driving experience that it's competitive in the class. The small steering wheel helps heighten the 308's sense of agility, meaning it feels more eager to turn into bends than some rivals.

Engine, 0-60mph and gearbox

The cheapest engine for the Peugeot 308 is a 1.2 petrol with 129bhp (badged 1.2 PureTech 130). It comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard and delivers acceleration that's respectable enough, with 0-62mph taking around 9.7 seconds.

The sporty-feeling 1.6-litre PureTech comes with 222bhp or 256bhp in the GTi, delivered at an identical 6,000rpm. Even the PureTech 205 does 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds – a significant performance step up over other 308 engines. The GTi manages it in just 6.0 seconds, with both hitting a 155mph top speed.

Hatchback. The 308 was available as a five-door hatchback, with a three-door limited to a few markets. In May 2010, Peugeot announced the return of a GTi model (known as the GT in the United Kingdom), featuring a turbocharged 1.6 L engine with 200 bhp (149 kW; 203 PS).

You get two choices here – both based on the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. As previously mentioned, you have a choice of two power outputs. The entry-level plug-in hybrid model has a combined output of 180hp, while the flagship variant develops 225hp.

Peugeot is recalling 2212 examples of its 2017-2020 Peugeot 308, 208 and 2008 due to an issue with the timing belt degrading. "The timing belt may degrade due to aged engine oil. If left unrepaired it may result in a reduction or a loss of braking performance," says the brand in its recall notice.
