Most often, a true starter relay is a small black cube plugged into an electrical fuse/relay box in the engine compartment, whereas a starter solenoid is (in most cases) attached directly to the starter on the engine (although it is sometimes located elsewhere in the engine compartment).

The starter relay is mounted on top of the starter solenoid.

The starter motor is typically hardwired to the battery via the starter solenoid due to the very high current draw required for operation. The solenoid will have a fuse though. You will have to check the location in the fuse box (typically mapped on the lid/cover).

If you have a blown fuse, you'll notice that your car will be difficult to start or will be unable to operate its electrical components. Checking fuses is easy to do and can save you hundreds of dollars over the life of your car. If you are unsure of what to look for, take your car to a mechanic!

Starting relay position

The fuse box (also called the power box), the instrument panel under the fuse panel, or the right fender are all possible locations. In most cars, it will be under the hood, in a large box with a black lid. This is where car fuses and relays are installed. It is also called a fuse box.

The ignition switch sends a signal to the body control module, the body control module sons a signal to the engine control module and then the engine control module activate the starter relay. When that happens the contacts inside the relay click and the relay closes.

Several symptoms can indicate a faulty starter solenoid. These include: Clicking sound: A single click or repeated clicking noise when turning the ignition key suggests a bad solenoid. No response: If there's no sound or movement when you turn the key, the solenoid might not be engaging at all.

If your starter relay has gone bad, the electrical signal will never make it from the battery to the starter motor. As a result, your engine won't turn over - no matter how many times you turn the key. A faulty relay often produces an audible clicking sound when you turn your car.

A defective starter drive can allow the pinion gear to freewheel during engine cranking, resulting in a whirring or whining noise. In most cases, because the pinion gear isn't engaging the flywheel properly, the engine will also fail to crank.

Check Your Cables and Sensors

All it takes is a cable to shake loose or a sensor to go out for your truck not to start. Double-check these components to make sure nothing is out of place. If you spot an issue, reconnect or restore the problem part, and your truck should be ready to go.

Normally when you just get a single click at the starter it is a poor connection within the battery cable somewhere or batteries that will no longer pass a load test having bad cells or other internal problems.
